Tampa Bay Storm Season Ready

Generator Installation & Service in Tampa Bay

Power outages in Florida aren't a matter of if — they're a matter of when. Third Gen Electric installs, services, and repairs standby and portable generators for homes and businesses across Tampa Bay. We size the system right, wire it to code, and make sure it works when you need it most.

Generator Installation

A properly installed standby generator starts automatically when the power goes out and keeps running until utility power is restored. We handle every step — from load analysis and equipment selection to gas line coordination, electrical connection, and permit inspection.

  • Whole-home and partial-home standby systems
  • Automatic transfer switch (ATS) installation
  • Manual transfer switch and interlock kits
  • Generator sizing and load analysis
  • Natural gas and propane connections
  • Permit pulling and inspection coordination
  • Portable generator hookup and inlet box installation
  • Critical circuit selection for partial backup systems

Florida's Power Grid Puts Your Home at Risk

Tampa Bay sits in one of the most lightning-prone regions in the United States, and hurricane season runs June through November every year. Power outages are a regular occurrence — not a rare event. A standby generator eliminates the problem automatically: no setup, no extension cords, no scrambling for fuel when the storm hits.

Generator Servicing & Repair

A generator that hasn't been serviced is a generator that might not start. We maintain, load test, and repair generators from all major manufacturers — whether we installed it or not. If your unit won't start, runs rough, or hasn't been touched in years, we can diagnose and fix it before storm season.

  • Annual maintenance and load testing
  • Oil, filter, and spark plug replacement
  • Battery inspection and replacement
  • Transfer switch testing and repair
  • No-start diagnosis and repair
  • Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Champion
  • Pre-storm season tune-ups
  • Transfer switch replacement

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about generator installation. Don't see yours? Give us a call — we're happy to talk through your project.

What size generator do I need for my home?

It depends on what you want to power. A 10–14kW unit covers essential circuits (HVAC, refrigerator, lights, outlets). A 20–22kW unit can run most of a typical home. We do a load analysis before recommending any equipment so you're not paying for more than you need — or getting stuck without enough capacity.

Do I need a permit for generator installation?

Yes. In Florida, generator installation requires an electrical permit and typically a gas permit if you're connecting to natural gas. We pull all permits and coordinate the inspection — you don't have to deal with the building department.

How long does installation take?

Most residential standby generator installations take one to two days. The electrical work is typically done in a day; gas line work may require a separate visit from a licensed plumber, which we can help coordinate.

Can you service a generator you didn't install?

Yes. We service and repair generators from all major manufacturers regardless of who installed them. If you have a unit that hasn't been maintained in a few years, we can do a full tune-up and load test to make sure it's ready before storm season.

What's the difference between a standby and a portable generator?

A standby generator is permanently installed, connected to your gas line, and starts automatically when power goes out. A portable generator requires manual setup, fueling, and connection. We install both — but standby systems offer the most protection with zero effort during an outage.
